Downtown Association Develops Safety Plan

Burlington, VT, was long known as a small, picturesque college town. But in recent years, Burlington has become afflicted by big-city problems, including crime and homelessness.

Taking matters into its own hands, the Burlington Business Association developed a six point plan to ensure that the downtown is safe for residents, employees, and visitors.

One important point is expansion of the association’s security escort program. During the 2021 holidays, the Burlington Business Association made downtown ambassadors available to escort visitors who felt unsafe. The plan brings back that program for the 2022 holidays. And in a new feature, ambassadors will also be available to walk downtown workers from their places of business to their vehicles.

Details on the downtown safety plan appear in the December issue of Downtown Idea Exchange newsletter. Click to learn more about Downtown Idea Exchange and other resources for revitalizing downtowns and commercial corridors.
