Despite growing public concern about Flock cameras, some communities are ramping up use of surveillance cameras downtown.
As part of the Strengthen the Core downtown revitalization master plan, the City of Windsor, Ont., Canada launched Project Greenlight in May. The project will see the installation of green-light cameras on as many as 90 businesses throughout the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Area. Initially, the cost will be shared by property owners and the city.
Security ONE will install, maintain, operate, and monitor the cameras. The cameras will provide real-time monitoring with geo-fencing, two-way communication, and bright green lights to deter trespassing.
The company explains that the trespass warnings can be tailored to local needs. For example, in one location, a firm voice may be used to notify people that they are trespassing and that police will be notified. In another location, a friendly voice might be used to notify people of business hours and ask them to return.
