Downtown Salina, KS, is steadily growing its collection of outdoor sculpture through a combination of annual displays and targeted purchases. Each year between 15 and 25 sculptures are selected and displayed downtown as part of SculptureTour Salina. Residents and visitors may follow a self-guided walking tour to view each piece and to vote for their favorite. The sculpture with the most votes is purchased by the city and becomes part of Salina’s permanent public art collection.
SculptureTour Salina actively promotes the sale of artwork in each exhibition, encouraging corporate and private purchases throughout the community. Since 2011, forty sculptures have been sold including purchases by the city. A simple one-page flier includes the walking tour and ballot.
Public art programs are covered regularly in Downtown Idea Exchange newsletter.
