Night Markets Activate Downtowns After Dark

Night markets are coming alive after dusk in cities across North America. These bustling open-air markets originated in Asia, where they became a fundamental part of urban nightlife. Today, they are expanding to North America particularly in cities with diverse immigrant populations. These new night markets showcase everything from global cuisine and local crafts to live music, attracting both locals and tourists alike.

Night markets also provide an opportunity for local business owners, makers, and artisans to test their concepts and sell their goods directly to consumers.

Popular night markets include the massive Richmond Night Market in Vancouver, BC, Canada and the 626 Night Market in California’s San Gabriel Valley.

On a smaller scale is the New Haven Night Market in New Haven, CT. The event has been growing steadily since its launch in 2018. Initially a spring event, it grew to three nights per year in spring, summer, and fall. The events begin at 5 p.m. and for the next five hours live music, food and locally made goods fill the city’s 9th Square District. Over 100 vendors are on hand as well as half a dozen local nonprofits.

The event provides a real impact. “Having 7,000 people come down here for a night market definitely is a boost for our merchants downtown,” says Win Davis, executive director of New Haven’s Town Green District.
