In Raleigh, NC, the city is installing a new generation of garbage bins. Evanston, IL, is also upgrading its trash receptacles. And New York City is cajoling litterbugs to stop dropping trash on city streets. It’s an age-old battle with some new solutions.
Downtown Raleigh has introduced trash, recycling, and cardboard, or TRAC, bins in the city center. The city says the receptacles aim to declutter sidewalks, streamline waste collection, and make downtown look better. The bins are housed in a colorful corral in what were once parking spaces.
Raleigh describes the TRAC bins as high-capacity, above-ground containers that mark a significant improvement over the traditional 95-gallon rolling waste bins. Each TRAC bin boasts a capacity of 522 gallons, more than five times the capacity of the existing bins. This substantial increase means fewer collections and less overflow.
